Cycling

The Largs OIR Cycling Group meets weekly on Thursdays from about 10a.m. until mid to late afternoon and at present we have about 12 to 16 regular cyclists in their 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.
The length of the ride depends on the weather and the time of year.

We use a variety of bikes to suit our own needs – road, hybrid and mountain bikes. However, most of the riders are now using electric bikes. We wear comfortable clothing – Lycra is NOT essential, but helmets and waterproofs are recommended!

We have no set programme as the route is decided by some of the most regular riders on the Tuesday prior to the ride, taking into account the forecast for the following Thursday. All members are then informed by group email of the time, meeting place and a brief outline of the route.

We have a number of experienced riders who undertake the leadership role but once new members are established with the group they are encouraged to try leading a ride supported if necessary by experienced leaders. It is hoped that all members of the group will lead at least one ride per year which will help ease the load on the experienced leaders.

We try to use cycle tracks and minor roads avoiding very steep hills if possible.

We regularly use the train from Largs to reach more distant cycle routes. A popular starting point is Kilwinning as there are many lovely rides in that locality. Other starting points include Prestwick, Ardrossan, Glengarnock, Johnstone and Glasgow. For those that find the distances too strenuous the routes often pass near convenient railway stations which can provide a quick, easy, ‘escape’ and a trip home by train.

We often use the ferries. During the summer months we have travelled as far as Rothesay, Dunoon and Kilcreggan to start our rides.

We ALWAYS have a coffee/lunch stop or a picnic on the occasional warm, sunny day.

We welcome riders who have a reliable bike, some cycling experience, and can manage a distance of about 20 to 30 miles at an average speed of about 10 miles per hour. No-one is ever left behind, and should a problem arise with a bike then several of us carry some tools and have the skills to do minor roadside repairs.

Ride groups are limited in size and we are currently at our limit and cannot accept new members

Once restrictions are lifted we will be open to additional members. So if you would like to register your name with us please contact one of the following riders.”
